I really enjoyed Jake's blog post about Seinfeld because of his conviction. He 100% believes that Seinfeld is the best comedy of all time, and he provides evidence to support it, both subjective and objective. He talks about how every episode barely has anything to do with the next, relationships are short and often quickly forgotten, and how all of the main characters are generally terrible people. I haven't watched too much Seinfeld but I have definitely seen it and I do enjoy it. I get the sense that Jake enjoys it so much because it's not predictable and the characters aren't stereotypical, which I can also appreciate. I personally get very bored of the simple formula that many sitcoms have and Seinfeld has a very different rhythm to it which I enjoy. Jake also talks about how the characters ignore basic emotions and how doing so makes them appear funnier because that it the point of the show. Seinfeld will throw all logic and general reasoning out the window just for the sake of humor. I like seeing how passionate Jake is about this show and I definitely need to watch more Seinfeld.
I just want to mention that I meant to upload this a while back but the wifi cut out and didn't save what I had and then I forgot to rewrite it, so I'm rewriting it. Personally, I love John Mulaney, and I was excited to see that this was the topic for the blog post. I love how, as Caroline explained, we as the audience are put in a position of superiority by looking at how Mulaney puts himself in a position of inferiority. He's incredibly self aware and isn't afraid to make fun of himself, and we're allowed to laugh at the stupid things that he's been through because he's incredible relatable, just like Jim Gaffigan. Caroline also talked about how he uses relief humor by poking fun at obvious stereotypes and allows the audience to laugh at things we usually shouldn't.
Hell yeah you got it exactly right. It's all on Hulu, and they're reruns all the time. You don't need to watch in order to understand it.
ReplyDeleteDo think think it's the greatest of all time? Why or why not? How could we convince those who are skeptical of this claim?
ReplyDeleteI think your analysis definitely helps support the incongruity theory... Because "Seinfeld" throws basic logic and reasoning out the window, the viewer never know what to expect, and therefore is constantly taken aback (and subsequently amused) by each episode's plot-line (or lack thereof).
